| | | | | | | | | New technology: Game-changing, new security for public Wi-Fi. | | | | | | | | It's an undisputed fact that OpenDNS is the clear innovator in DNS + security. And with our preview of DNSCrypt, our new technology that fundamentally solves a critical problem in Internet security, we're introducing one of our most game-changing innovations yet. Every day millions of people surf the Web on public Wi-Fi in coffee shops, airports, hotel lobbies and other places. While convenient for telecommuting or passing time, this Web activity puts you in a highly vulnerable situation. That's because these networks are notoriously insecure, and make it easy for cyber criminals and ISPs alike to see what you're doing online and spy, spoof and conduct Man in the Middle attacks. Put simply, DNSCrypt encrypts, or hides, the communication between your computer or tablet and our servers while you're browsing the Web. That means you have heightened privacy and security and no one can see what you're doing online. We take little more seriously than our responsibility to make the Internet safer, and as the world's largest DNS provider we're thrilled about the potential positive impact the new technology can have. Our expectation is that DNSCrypt will fast become the standard. DNSCrypt is currently available for Macs. A Windows version is coming soon and will be announced here in this newsletter, so stay tuned. Techies can learn more on our site and find the open sourced code on GitHub. | | | | | | | | | | | An easy resolution to keep: Use OpenDNS on all devices. | | | | | | | | After our holiday break, the OpenDNS offices were roaring with reviews and chatter about the new gadgets our team members received as gifts. Debates were aplenty: Kindle Fire v. iPad, must-have xBox game, iPhone or Android, and we could go on! But there was one thing our team agreed on: The best way to secure all of your mobile and Internet-connected devices is using OpenDNS. Setting up OpenDNS to secure all of your new devices is as simple as making sure OpenDNS is set up on your router. If you're already using OpenDNS on your router, you'll instantly see the benefits on your new devices. OpenDNS settings will apply to the new gadgets whether you're using OpenDNS simply for fast and reliable DNS or if you're also using Parental Controls. It's easy to add Parental Controls for these new these devices if you now need to block content. As always, there's no additional software to install and it's completely free to protect additional devices. To add Parental Controls for the new gadget on your home network, you'll just need to first make sure OpenDNS is set up your home router. Then, simply log in to your Dashboard, select your home network, and enable the filtering settings of your choice. In just a few clicks, all of your new toys will be protected and you can get back to enjoying them! | | | | | | | | | | | Meet an OpenDNSer: Jesse Davidson. | | | | | | | | As one of OpenDNS's earliest employees, and one of our incredibly-talented engineers, this meet and greet with Jesse is long overdue. With a world of diverse experiences under his belt, Jesse shares what keeps him motivated at OpenDNS. You had a fairly unique experience growing up in Saudi Arabia. Tell us more. I'm what's affectionately known as an Aramco brat or a third culture kid. I grew up in Saudi Arabia in Dhahran, a company town. I attended an American-style school, was in a band with my dad, brother, and schoolmates, and played baseball. What are you reading? The Dictator's Handbook. Just in case. You're an OpenDNS original. How has OpenDNS changed since you started more than four years ago? Our engineering philosophy - keep it simple - hasn't changed much since we started. But everyone has a different idea of simple: with a lot more people, from very different backgrounds, we end up with unique, creative solutions. What is your favorite thing about working at OpenDNS? Working with and for people who don't hesitate to tell me when I'm doing it right, and also when I'm doing it wrong. Many small failures add up to big success. P.S. OpenDNS is hiring like crazy. Come work with Jesse and help make the Internet safer with innovative new technology. | | | | | | | | | | January Home Edition | | | Total DNS Queries Since 2006 28,265,663,748,383 |
